Having already covered DC’s solicitations for December, it was brought to my attention that I had not covered the previous months. Whoops. My bad guys. So, I come to you now to inform you of all the goodies that will be coming out this October for you viewing pleasure! Included are a majority of the Vertigo titles that will be released as well. Some really great stuff, and even though I never though I would be saying this; I can’t wait for the second issues!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock or perhaps don’t give a crap about comics, you know that DC Comics is about to embark on an audacious journey that will either make them or break them. What does this mean, comic readers? This means a LOT of your favorite characters’ backstories will change and some titles will be canceled altogether come September. I will provide you with quick little summaries of each of the 52 titles as well as links where you can read more about the relaunch. Most comic book shops are also providing a free little booklet with a breakdown as well in case you want to stop by and pick one up to have on hand. Why is DC doing this you might ask? (more…)
A little over two weeks ago, DC Comics officially announced their plans to relaunch the DC Universe with 52 new #1 issues, as well as start day-and-date digital release. The news was absorbed quickly by both comic fans and retailers, with reactions differing in and from both groups. Some fans hated the idea of another reboot, stating it was unnecessary and could only harm both the content and sales of the comics. Others thought it was a brilliant plan, one that would not only allow for a fresh new approach in the DCU, but provide a starting point for new readers. Fans were split down the middle on a scale not seen since Marvel’s Civil War story arc. With all 52 titles announced now, it would seem as if the initial anxiety and euphoria has passed, allowing both sides to realize the loss and gain of this relaunch.
Writer Gail Simone summed up the relaunch the best by stating, “There were some painful decisions made, some I disagree with. Some YOU will probably disagree with. Every book is someone’s favorite. Every character is someone’s heart. And that is going to be hard in some cases…almost everyone is going to lose something they really loved…Like every DCU that has ever existed, it is a canvas that has a lot of blank space in it. These launch titles are not the end. There’s more room to be filled in. There will be some growing pains. But we, all of us, get to see the kingdom from a new angle, with new territories.” (more…)
Prior to DC’s big announcement I was in the midst of writing an article about the implications of Flashpoint on the DCU. I even complained that some of these allegedly ‘big’ events simply were rendered useless a year later… well be careful what you wish for. The speculation of what will happen after Flashpoint was answered with DC’s biggest announcement since Crisis of the Infinite Earths. The rumors of a massive DC Universe reboot have been confirmed. In August/September, comic fans will be the recipients of 52 #1 issues as the entire line of DC Universe titles gets a re-launch. Everyone from Superman to Booster Gold will be getting a revamp, which includes redesigns and a “younger” continuity, as stated by DC in their press release May 31st. (more…)

Personally, I’m hoping this redesign brings in new comic readers and doesn’t estrange the faithful ones :/
