KQ: Obviously, I’m gonna kick this off by asking you what attracted you to cosplaying in the first place! How did you get started?
Cheeker: The hobby was actually inspired by one of my high school teachers! She was a cosplayer herself and introduced me (and the rest of the anime club) to the art of cosplaying. My first cosplay was Kairi from Kingdom Hearts II in 2008. One of my cousins and I literally made it the night before the con. Ever since then, cosplaying has been a must for every convention.
KQ: So what exactly do you look for when choosing a new character?
Cheeker: I honestly just pick a character I like. I know a lot of people base it off of who they will look good as or what is going to get the most attention, but I’d rather cosplay a character I have a lot of love for than someone I think will get pictures taken of me. Of course there are characters I won’t touch because I KNOW I won’t look good as them or are too complex for me to tackle, but part of cosplay is understanding what you can and can’t pull off.
Cheeker: Naturally I have to rep Louisiana’s very own MechaCon, it was my first con and I’ve attended every year since. It gets better and better every year. I also really like MobiCon in Alabama and Fan:DOM Con in Florida. They’re both smaller conventions, but they are oh-so much fun! (And I expect them to grow a WHOLE lot in the next few years!)
KQ: Is there a certain cosplayer you really admire?
Cheeker: Right now my favorite cosplay is a tie between Panty from Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt and BeastBoy from Teen Titans. Cosplaying Panty is totally my guilty pleasure, hahaha. I love how risque and gross she can be. It’s so fun to get to hang all over people and pick in my ears! I love crossplaying, so naturally I enjoyed cosplaying BeastBoy. He’s also so loud and obnoxious and FUN. I love characters where I can just be ridiculous and I sure could in that cosplay. (Although I had to contain myself a bit because the binding makes it hard to breathe, LOL!)
KQ: Do you find that it’s more fun to cosplay anime characters or video game characters?
Cheeker: If I have to pick from the two, I’d say anime. But honestly, my favorite genre to cosplay from is comic books! Although I’ve been very much a hard core anime and video game fan all of my life, I also love comics a whole lot and it’s very rare that I meet people who also share that love. When I cosplay from comics I always tend to meet great people who share the same love and that I can also sit down and nerd out about things like X-Men and Spider-Man with. It’s wonderful!
KQ: What costumes are you planning to debut in 2013?
Cheeker: Right now my plans include Polaris from X-Men, a revamed Poison Ivy, Yumi from HiHi Puffy AmiYumi, Male Ranma from Ranma 1/2, and the one I am most excited for… Zarbon from DragonBall Z! I have more planned, I’m just not sure what yet. I’d also like to dish out Lum from Urusei Yatsura, Lina Inverse from Slayers, She-Hulk, and Dark Magician Girl from Yu-Gi-Oh. I guess we’ll find out what’s new when the time comes? Haha.
